There are two types of camels in this world; those who can’t count.
All camels have three lips. Their upper lip is split right up the middle, and each side can be independently controlled. It seems this is to make it more talented at picking up the sparse food in their desert homes.
When we picture camels, we probably think of them in Egypt, the Sahara desert, and the middle eastern countries. That is where the vast majority of camels live, but there are no wild camels to be found. They are all domesticated, used for transportation, milk, and wool. All those camels in that part of the world, being of the dromedary sort, have but one hump. The camel’s hump is a large fat storage place, that they can use later to survive if needed. They can last for months without food, and a week without water.
The two-humped camel (Bactrian) is found in the Gobi desert in northern China and Mongolia. These camels are endangered, with only about 900 wild camels left. There is now a protected refuge area set up for them in China. They are unique in that they can handle the hot summers (50 degrees celsius) and the freezing winters (-30 degrees) with thier shaggy coat.
